My idea is the following:
During the next few weeks, someone will post a topic each week: To take a photo following a certain description. We are free to take the pic as we like, interpreting the topic in our personal way. The idea is to get to know the world each one lives in, seen through his/her own eyes. We post the topic each Saturday, so we have until the following Saturday to post our picture of the week (even though there is no problem if someone is a bit late, we should just try to keep up the pace). Maybe someone else wants to propose the topic the following Saturday, and so on.

What do you think? If you like the idea, I post the first topic tomorrow.

The other day I was watching something about Queensland, and I was stuck on my chair in front of so many Nature's beauDies!

I find it very hard to imagine myself living there, it would be like being part of a postcard! hehe

One day, I'll luuuuve that our Penny tell us more about *her* Queensland (with pics and all you know? you know! hehehe)

Here are 2 pics I've just found from Queensland, do you recognize your *home land*, Penny?
Gawd, you live in Paradise, sista!

Sunny Monday you lot!

Watched a wonderful documentary on Saturday about an old man of 82 returning to a French field to identify the remains of his Hurricane aircraft, from which he parachuted after it was shot down in 1940. Billy Drake was part of No 1 RAF Squadron based in France, and shot down 23 enemy aircraft in total. (When you consider you were an official 'ace' when you bagged six, his tally is something...)
He was given a champagne reception by the local Mayor, and met other locals who saw him fall to the ground and take him to hospital. A picture of the 8 young men standing outside the Mayors offices in 1940 was strange because nothing seemed to have changed in all those years. The building was exactly as it was, except only Billy was left... The tears were very real, and he spoke good French! He remembered one of his friends who later died, and who was the first RAF pilot to shoot down a German plane, who then took the very surprised German pilot back to their mess for a slap up dinner! The remains of Billy's aircraft was still in the field, and they recovered the armour plate from behind his seat, and which saved his life.

Life is strange huh?

sigh... who said girls were easier than boys? Clearning up P2's bedroom today and Mrs Jack found some 72hour emergency contraceptives. Even though she is now over 16, having unprotective sex is stupid. I will have to ban visits of the boyfriend when we are not home I think... have to have a 'serious' talk with her this evening... any suggestions?

Censorship & Pc. Today I hear that schools are advising that educational trips supervised by teachers are dangerous… to the teachers! Because of increasing litigation. Parents now routinely get ambulance-chasing lawyers to sue at the slightest thing. Teachers are now ‘guided’ on how to protect kids on an outing. EG: Children should not be left near water (durr), not be allowed to stand near water, can only dangle their feet in the water. Also, photographing kids is now an offence (the pedo fear) A mother last week lost her child in a big dept. store, she asked them to Tannoy her child’s name… they refused in case a pedo used the name to gain the child’s confidence. What happened to ‘common sense’?

I forgot to add, today a garage owner who takes in 21 year old apprentices for work experience from the local college has been told by the Vice Principle (hehe) to remove offending sexist pictures from the garage workshop... (topless girls) So as not to offend the workers... pc again...

An Aussie Lass, a Frenchman and a Burmese

The blog of an "Aussie Lass" who met a Frenchman on the Internet and ended up marrying him and living in France (though they have plans to move to Australia).

The Internet has brought many people from different countries together in more ways than one, hasn't it ?

And this is not at all uncommon... I keep coming accross blogs written by people who have left their country to move in with somebody they met through the Internet... the other side of the Atlantic, or the other side of the planet !

I think it's great that people can communicate through chats and weblogs with people from other countries.

You know how much I luuuuuve fairytales.... so here's a lil one I'm sure some of us will appreciate :P

A fairy told a married couple: "For being such an exemplary married couple for 35 years, I will give you each a wish."

"I want to travel around the world with my dearest husband", said the wife.

The fairy moved her magic wand and - abracadabra! - two tickets appeared in her hands.

Now it was the husband's turn.
He thought for a moment and said: "Well this moment is very romantic, but an opportunity like this only occurs once in a lifetime. So... I'm sorry my love, but my wish is to have a wife 30 years younger than me."

The wife was deeply disappointed but, a wish was a wish.

The Fairy made a circle with her magic wand and - abracadabra!

Suddenly the husband was 90 years old.

Moral: Men might be bastards.
But fairies are... female.

Thursday? Is it? Well, after much thought and pulling out of hair I have decided to invest in some new digital equipment for the biz. All £10k worth. Biz has really collapsed recently, never done so few films. Maybe 30% down on last year. Very depressing. The trouble is - what do I do if I pull the plug? Anyway, it’s 100% tax deductable, and it may pull in work that is otherwise walking away. And I could always sell it - if the worst comes to the worst! And my overheads will be slashed in a couple of months when my leasing deal is finished. Hugh relief! So, if I can claw back some of the debt in the next year… what a miserable ambition!

Great that you have a new blogg Jenny! Here is one for you.
Jack’s fry-up.
Take two eggs, fry. Add button mushrooms, two pork sausages and two rashers of bacon. Grill two waffles and cover with baked beans. Combine and eat on knees.

Censorship and PC. I see France has now banned all religious headwear. I think I agree with this. Here, we allow Sikhs to wear a turban on motorbikes…
Yup, it seems we cannot crit anything anymore without the pc brigade falling on our heads. Much as I fantasised about BD in my youth, she has gone nuts. Opinion always seems to move to extreme somehow huh? A town hall here banned the local Christian Church from advertising their nativity play in case it offended ‘ethnic’ feelings.
One council even banned the flying of the Union Jack for the same reasons!

Cd’s. Free music on the net. CD sales have collapsed here. The message is clear. The big music moguls are losing their grip on the music biz. A bloody good thing, now it is becoming economical for unknown bands to produce their own music. But how are they going to make a living from it? There is ALWAYS a price to be paid, and if everyone now expects everything to be free… Some creative thinking is needed.

My future might be a shop doorway…

Gucci, Versaci, Buyright, Woolworth’s, stilettos, flats, sneakers, clogs, flipflops - they all parade for me irrespective of their class or wealth - and all uniformly ignored me. I watch and study them, safe in the haven of my invisibility. Rarely do I look up, happy to be here, down at heel.

You don’t really want to know my story - so I won’t tell you. Maybe you think that you can imagine my fall, pretend you understand the depths to which I have sunk, but you would only be guessing. Maybe you will unwillingly discover this world, this underbelly hiding beneath societies rich carpet, so glaringly obvious that no one perceives it’s existence. We are true diamonds hiding in water, and one day you too may shine brilliantly unseen.

I do not envy you. My eyes do not see you. I see things you no longer see. The world is at my feet. My view foreshortened, I see meaning, meaningless and chaos. For you to see, you would need to be me. Would that journey be worth the discovery? Circumstance may not give you the choice. Painful beauty is freely observable to those that can see, have time to see, like me. Your wealth I do not covet. I have wealth, a different wealth, but worthless in your eyes.

From your heights above me as you rush past - your conscience momentarily salved by the few coins thrown in my direction - tell me in truth that you see further, see better?

It was the blonde that dun it...

Dear DHNettes, DHNers !

Thanks to you and your wonderful recipes, I'm sure my lasagne will be delicious, scrumptious, out-of-this world !

As we had mentioned the idea of setting up a sort of recipe blog, I thought I might give it a go... But I'm no technology guru, so I just created a new blog...

Anyway, here it is.

Hope you like it, though it's not much, and NOT AT ALL the sort of site that would be necessary to store recipes (we would need a database, categories and a search thinggie), but it's there and you already have a grand choice of two recipes : "Mizz Penny's Lasagne" and "Lasagne à la Candles", which is a start !

Bon Appétit !

I'm off to "dodo" ("beddy-byes"), nighty-night Everyone !

PS : two interesting blogs I discovered recently : this one, which is written by an American girl who lives in France and has a French boyfriend. There are plenty of interesting things on her website : "La France by Fraise", pictures of beautiful kimonos and plenty more.

"Lost in transit" is, as they put it themselves, "a group weblog by expatriates and emigrants around the world, writing about their experiences."

I hope you enjoy reading them !

Thank you for sharing what you were feeling Ariel - I'm sorry to hear that you have been offended by some of the comments about the US that you have read in the DHN in our last posts. I am more than sure that none of them were an intentional criticism against you personally. In fact I would bet my life on it!

The fact that you did take what was being said personally indicates that you feel connected to these comments simply by being an American. And that's fair enough. I think if I was feeling like the whole world was against my country then I too would feel a little defensive as well - it's only natural.

However, while we are being upfront I need to say this, I cannot agree with your comment that none of us here had much good to say about America at all. I think we said some pretty darn great things....important things...on the positive side. The fact that we also mentioned negative things in no way takes away from all the guuuud that was mentioned. It simply means we did as were asked to do in the questionaire - which was to paint a picture of both sides in as few words as possible.

Let's just get a little bit real here for one moment ok? The comments given had to be vast generalisations because it's not possible to do anything more than that in one word. Do you honestly believe that any of us here are incapable of understanding that ALL Americans are not the same? Knowing what you know of the rest of us....can you honestly believe that?

Anyhoooo.....I just needed to say all that because I felt my integrity was being attacked, which is something I don't take lightly.

Have a great weekend ....as usual "I Insist!" :-)))

Belgian Gastronomy

I lived in Belgium for 4 years and enjoyed it (moving from a flat to a big house with a garden was part of the fun).

Here are some of my favourite Belgian food :

This is a "gaufre bruxelloise". You sprinkle it with icing sugar. It is "lighter" than the Liège waffle.

This is a "gaufre liégoise". The Liège waffle is "denser" and has a thin sugar coating which is slightly caramelized.

This is called "cramique". It's a sort of sweet bread with sultanas that is eaten for breakfast.

"Speculoos". These biscuits are sweet and spicey. On Saint Nicholas' Day, children get a big one in the shape of Saint Nicholas.

"Moule-frites". Mussels and chips. Typical Belgian dish.

There are plenty of different bears in Belgium. This one is called "Mort Subite", Sudden Death !

I surfed the internet, and from what I have read, not many people like
the Americans...they have preconcieved notions...that we are "rednecks",
that we have no class, no culture, and that we are just a bunch of arrogant,
ignorant people-that like a spoiled child we react with anger when we don't get our way...and that we want war, that we want to dominate the world...what a terrible shame that we are judged by what our government does, and not by who we are as a people...I find it disturbing that even with you all, no one had much good to say about
us. Although I cannot change how you all feel, I hope that you will realize that we are
human too and like everyone have good and bad about us. This is a rude awakening
for me personally, because I had felt that you all had met enough of us (me included)
online or elsewhere that you didn't feel so negative about us.

Awwwwlrighty - here we go!

Australia + laidback lifestyle - it's need to latch on to the shirt tails of the "bigger" nations.
Canada + maple trees in autumn - maple syrup......yeeeeeuch!!
China + decadent use of the colours red and gold - too much poverty
Belgium + chocolates - not enough export of their chocs to Aus
Brazil + the good looking people - the good looking people.
France + architecture, art of "finessing" - it's too far away!
Germany + family, pretzles, knackwurst - it's all to far away too!
Italy + pasta - the language seems harsh
UK + the pubs, tv drama & comedy - the "grey" weather.

Following Ariel's comment on Jack's choice of words, I would like to add that these "images" I have are the ones that spring to mind automatically. Of course, these are sometimes prejudices, and though I don't like the "image" that the US give of their country, I KNOW that it is not what the whole country thinks. The only Americans I ever met where very nice and educated people. Of course, this goes for the other countries as well !

Australia: breath-taking landscapes / Kylie Minogue

Canada: wilderness / ice hockey

China: great civilization (philosophy, painting, architecture) / no place for the individual

Belgium: very laid-back people / Wallon-Flemish hatred

Brazil: music / obsession with physical appearance

France: food and culture (sorry, couldn't choose) / sense of superiority

Germany: environmentalist attitude / chequered trousers

Italy: art everywhere / noisy extroverts

USA: the right to "the pursuit of happiness" inscribed in the constitution/ self-righteousness

Ok, here's a lil game (?) to get rid of nasty devils.
In this blog, in any of the blog where my name appears I don't wanna any one to feel hurt because of his/her nationality.
When I tell something about RoastbeefLand or the US (because it happens sometimes :P), it is never meant to spit on people in general, rather on the fookin system.
+ .... I love teasing (oh, really?)

So here's the game:
10 countries:

Australia
Canada
China
Belgium
Brazil
France
Germany
Italy
UK
USA

2 answers for each country.

For each of them, you gotta tell:
1) the worst image you get in mind about the country
2) the best image you get in mind about the country

In a couple of words maximum for each. Better in one word.

If we could be really sincere, that would help :P
Critics about our own country or others should only help us to get *different* views and accept dem. Dat's my point here! :P

We've had a bit of a "nail bitey" kinda day here at Chez Sillan.

My neice who has been in India since before Christmas was to arrive back home tomorrow but has had a little bit of a problem with her flights. Apparantly her plane from India was unable to land in Columbo as planned because there had been some kind of accident there, so it was diverted to Madras.

The thing is, she had to be in Singapore by 11.30 (Bris time) tonight so that she could catch her connecting flight home but we've just found out she didn't make it in time. She is stuck in Sri Lanka and may be able to get a flight to Singapore tomorrow.

Ya know....airport security is a great thing and I'm glad we have it, but it really really reaaaaaaaaallllly sucks when you're trying to find out information of one of the passangers....'cause as ewe prolly know , the staff aren't allowed to give out any information on the people on their flights - not even to distressed Fathers or concerned Aunts! Sheeesh!

Anyhooo....she was finally able to contact us a little while ago, to let us know she is OK. Poor little thing....she was exhausted before she left India because she had been working non stop with an AIDS organisation helping people with AIDS in the slum areas.

And to make life just that little bit more interesting for her - when she checked in at the airport in India, she was made to also put her hand luggage in with the rest of her bags because it was too heavy...all she has on her person is her handbag. Talk about a learning experience!

So fingers crossed that she is able to get a flight to Singapore tomorrow.

"Dying for a pint"

Pub landlord opens up a graveyard for his regulars.

Landlord Julian Taylor has turned afield adjoining the village pub (the Church Inn) near Oldham into a cemetery.
And several customers have already put their name down for a plot.

"Its a beautiful spot to be bruied" , said Mr Taylor."One regular has even asked his friends to pop into the cemetery with their pints on Friday nights after he dies - so he can still have a drink with them."[...]

"The motto among some visitors to the pub when we were trying to get planning permission was "a pie, a pint and a plot". They did poke a bit of fun at first, but we have done this properly and it is a good place to be buried. I suppose we'll all end up there one day."

In the meantime, the favourite order at the inn remains a pint of Boddies.
